CALL FOR ARTISTS - 48 Blocks AC 2019 - Mural Application

We are currently seeking mural artists to create murals during 48 Blocks AC Mural Week from May 13-17, 2019.

Program Description:

48 Blocks Atlantic City is a 48 hour celebration of the artistic talents, creativity, community, culture, and history of Atlantic City. The 2019 event will take place June 21 - June 23, 2019, with 48 community-produced projects across the 48 blocks of the city.

Our program goals are to increase public access to art, give artistic talent a platform in Atlantic City, and engage the community through the event planning process.

48 Blocks AC is a program of the Atlantic City Arts Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing public access to art and fostering community art education in Atlantic City. The program is produced in partnership with Stockton University.

In 2019, our goal is to support the creation of 10 new murals during 48 Blocks AC Mural Week - May 13-17, 2019.

Materials & Stipend:

48 Blocks AC will reimburse artists for materials/tools costs within a pre-approved budget, and will provide ladders, lifts, and/or scaffolding, as well as any necessary wall prep.

48 Blocks AC shall secure any building permits, licenses or approval necessary for the lawful creation and execution of the work, including payment of all fees, providing the artist with a fully approved location for their mural.

48 Blocks AC will provide artists with lodging (if needed) and an expenses stipend during the Mural Week, as well as a $2000 artist stipend. All payments/reimbursements are contingent to fulfillment of terms of the Final Mural Agreement.

Application Guidelines & Deadline:

Application materials must be received no later than five o’clock in the evening (5:00 p.m.) EST on March 31, 2019.

  • Applications are open to any artists who abide by the program guidelines

  • Artists may apply as an individual or group; however the budget & stipend provided is per mural, not per person.

  • It is recommended that applicants have experience painting large-scale, outdoor murals, but artists with all levels of experience are encouraged to apply.

Selection Process:

Submissions will be reviewed by the 48 Blocks AC Leadership Team. Preliminary finalists will be invited for an in-person or Skype interview during early April. Finalists will be selected no later than April 15, 2019.

Selection Criteria:

Applications will be reviewed on (including but not limited to) the following criteria:

  • Appropriateness of qualifications for the project - applicants having experience painting large-scale, outdoor murals are preferred

  • Potential for artist’s work to enrich Atlantic City

  • Probability of successful execution and completion of project within the proposed time-frame

  • Completeness of application

Project Timeline:

All murals must be painted between May 13, 2019 and May 19, 2019. All work must be completed by May 19, 2019. (Housing will only be provided for May 13-17, 2019).

Artist Agreement:

Selected artists will be required to sign and comply with the Final Mural Agreement.

Other Requirements:

  • The artist must be able to keep the content of their work “family friendly,” no nudity or overtly sexual themes, hate speech or glorification of violence. The artist will be asked to refrain from painting anything that defames or invades the rights of any person, living or dead; or anything that could be construed as harmful to a third party.

  • Selected artists may be asked to submit details, models, or plans of their eventual piece.

  • The artist may not reproduce any copyrighted material.

  • There is no limit to the times you may apply; participants will not be selected for multiple projects.
